What should tomorrow's leaders be like?

We all are witnessing one of the biggest global recessions. Hopefully, it will be over in few months or more. However, current situation raises a vital question, "what should tomorrow's leaders be like"?

Recently I read an article detailing Marshall Goldsmith's views about tomorrow's leaders. Marshall Goldsmith is author of management-related literature, professor, consultant and executive coach. He is author of 24 management books. He also has a personal website that hosts over 200 free resources for visitors across the globe. Marshall said that leaders of the future must listen, learn and make mistakes.

I would like to outline some of the essential traits that tomorrow's leaders should possess.
(1) Everyday is a new learning and that is how a leader needs to develop himself/herself. Today's environment is very challenging and competitive. A leader need not be afraid of committing mistakes and should be ready to accept those.
(2) Leaders need to keep long term vision in mind. Ignoring long term vision can have adverse impacts on growth of the organization. I remember NRN Moorthy saying that there was a time when all the board members were in strong favor of selling Infosys, but NRN opposed it and today Infosys represents IT face of India in many ways.
(3) In future, CEOs/leaders will need to manage to people who have better IQ than leaders themselves. So, managing people and learning on the go is going to be very important.
(4) Willingness and desire to learn will play an important role. Good thing is that most of the Indian leaders/CEOs have attitude to learn more. In this challenging environment, one needs to challenge himself/herself and set higher goals to remain on the top.
(5) As CEOs grow their organizations, integrity needs to be maintained.

As we move forward to build a nation of leaders, let's groom ourselves as strong and true leaders. Continuous learning, people management and ethics are going to play an important role in this process.

Thanks for dropping by. Your comments are source of encouragement for me. I will be glad to hear from you.

sterproWell, i believe the leaders we need today and for tomorrow are those that are a lot more human in their outlook and view of their own lives, their society, their environment, other people, markets employees and the world.

A genuine human being with qualities of empathy, listening skills, power to understand the world and life as systemic whole, will lead and take decisions in a manner that is harmony with the various elements that make up the business environment. Today we have a classic 6 blind men and the elephant syndrome. Define the problem incorrectly and you are bound to go in circles.

Honesty, integrity and professionalism all stem from and are rooted in the individual's personal deeply held values. But those values are sustained and developed in an environment that encourages and supports those values.

If business objectives are in harmony with each other and with the external environment, you have people and the company prospering at a decent rate. And good human beings will come out of the woodwork and followers will create leaders.

Or, is the one who can read the environment correctly today and achieve short term results to be considered a good leader for tomo? The answers have always lied with us. We choose our politicians and our leaders we make them in the incubators of our society and our world.

If the toughest, meanest, fastest, strongest are the qualities we look for, we shall find people who qualify. If we look and want decent, intelligent, empathatic, kind, highly talented and bright professionals, we need to create that environment to start with and
such individuals will come forth and lead. No quick fix solutions on leadership i believe.

Best Regards,

Thanks to all for your comments.

@Harish and Mamta: I agree that every kindness for human being is very important, when being a leader. I believe, each one of us has capabilities to become a leader and we can certainly be empathetic, ethical and kind when becoming a leader. Leadership is a decision, not necessarily a position. My earlier post: http://rkjism.blogspot.com/2009/02/leadership-thinking-and-actions.html talks about it. So, let's make it happen.
